Listen to this article

“And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is part of the Old Testament and contains prophecies and visions received by the prophet Ezekiel. This particular verse serves as an introduction to a prophecy concerning Egypt and its downfall. The verse specifies the timing when the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel, indicating the divine inspiration behind the message.

Historical Context:The eleventh year, third month, and first day mentioned in the verse refer to the timeline within which Ezekiel received this prophecy. The specific dating suggests that Ezekiel received this word from the Lord during his exile in Babylon. It helps to place the prophecy in a historical context and provides a framework for understanding the subsequent verses.

Divine Inspiration:Ezekiel acknowledges that the word of the Lord came to him. Throughout the book, Ezekiel emphasizes that his prophecies are not his own words but messages from God. This highlights the authority and significance of the message being conveyed.

Importance of Timing:The precise dating in this verse indicates that God’s word is not arbitrary or haphazard; it comes at specific times for specific purposes. By noting the exact timing, Ezekiel conveys the urgency and significance of the message he is about to deliver. The timing aligns with God’s sovereign plan and underscores the divine involvement in human affairs.

Application:As readers, we can reflect on the importance of recognizing God’s timing in our lives. Just as God’s word came to Ezekiel at a specific time, we should be attentive to God’s leading and timing in our own lives. It is crucial to be receptive to His guidance and open to His word when it comes. This verse reminds us of the divine orchestration and the importance of being attuned to God’s voice.
