Ezekiel 37:8
And when I beheld, loe, the sinews and the flesh came vp vpon them, and the skin couered them aboue; but there was no breath in them. Ezekiel 37:8 (KJV)
“Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live.” This declaration, found in the vision of Ezekiel, introduces the promise of restoration that God gives to the prophet. In the vision Ezekiel is placed in a valley filled with dry bones, a vivid symbol of the hopeless and lifeless condition of Israel during the Babylonian exile. God shows the prophet this scene to illustrate both spiritual and physical renewal that He intends to bring about.
The Context (Ezekiel 37:1‑7)
The Spirit of the Lord transports Ezekiel to the valley where the bones lie scattered and dry, signifying total absence of life. God asks Ezekiel whether the bones can live, and Ezekiel answers that only the Lord knows. Then the Lord commands him, “O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord,” and prepares him to proclaim God’s promise.
The Promise of Restoration (Ezekiel 37:8)
In verse 8 God assures Ezekiel that He will cause breath to enter the dry bones, bringing them back to life. The “breath” represents the life‑giving Spirit of God, and the promise declares that the people of Israel will be revived both spiritually and physically from their desolate state.
The Fulfillment (Ezekiel 37:9‑14)
As Ezekiel prophesies, the bones assemble, sinews and flesh cover them, and the breath of life enters. The once‑dead bodies become a vast army, symbolizing the restored nation of Israel returning from exile.
Lessons for Today
The Power of God’s Word – The vision demonstrates that God’s spoken word can transform even the most hopeless situations. Ezekiel’s obedience in proclaiming the word results in miraculous restoration, encouraging believers to trust and speak God’s promises over their circumstances.
The Sovereignty and Grace of God – Despite Israel’s rebellion, God does not abandon them. His sovereign grace promises renewal for those who turn to Him in repentance and faith, showing that no circumstance is beyond His redemptive power.
The Resurrection Power of God – The dry‑bone vision points forward to the resurrection power displayed in Christ. Just as God gave life to the dead bones, He offers new life through Jesus’ death and resurrection, pointing believers to the hope of eternal life.
Conclusion
Ezekiel 37:8 is a pivotal moment in the valley‑of‑dry‑bones vision, affirming God’s promise to bring life and restoration to His people. The passage underscores the power of God’s word, His sovereign grace, and the ultimate resurrection hope found in Jesus Christ.
