Ezekiel 37:7

So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.

Ezekiel 37:7 (KJV)

In Ezekiel 37, the prophet receives a vision from God in the Valley of Dry Bones. The valley filled with scattered, lifeless bones pictures the hopelessness and spiritual deadness of Israel during the Babylonian exile. Verse 7 sits at the turning point: Ezekiel speaks to the bones exactly as God commanded, and the promised restoration begins to unfold.

Ezekiel’s obedience is immediate and complete. He does not question the command or hesitate at its impossibility; he prophesies as he was commanded. This act of faithfulness demonstrates that true obedience trusts God’s word even when the outcome seems beyond human understanding. The noise and shaking that follow are signs of divine intervention, showing that the restoration of a dead and lifeless situation can only come through the mighty work of God. As Ezekiel speaks, the scattered bones come together, bone to his bone. This reassembly represents the beginning of Israel’s restoration—the reunification and revival of a nation that seemed utterly hopeless. The dramatic movement from death to order is the direct result of God’s word spoken through His prophet.

The effectiveness of God’s word in Ezekiel 37:7 echoes the creation account, where God speaks and things come into being (Genesis 1). Just as God’s word brought life at the beginning, His word through Ezekiel begins to bring life to the dry bones. This connection underscores that God’s promises are certain and His word is effective. The verse also points forward to the spiritual resurrection found in Christ, who is the ultimate source of new life for all who believe.

Ezekiel’s example teaches believers to obey God’s commands even when they appear unconventional or difficult. It reminds us of God’s power and sovereignty: no situation is beyond His ability to restore and renew. When we face circumstances that seem dead and lifeless, we are encouraged to trust in God’s promises and to speak His word boldly, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill what He has spoken. The vision assures us that God can transform any hopeless situation into one filled with life and purpose.

This verse invites us to consider our own response to God’s commands. Are we willing to obey even when the outcome is uncertain? Do we believe that God’s word has power to bring life out of death? The same God who caused the bones to come together is at work today, bringing spiritual renewal to His people and hope to the world.
