Ezekiel 47:10
And it shall come to passe that the fishers shall stand vpon it, from Engedi euen vnto En-eglaim; they shall be a place to spread foorth nets, their fish shall bee according to their kindes, as the fish of the great Sea, exceeding many. Ezekiel 47:10 (KJV)
Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the Babylonian exile, receiving visions and messages from God. In Ezekiel 47 the prophet sees a river flowing from the temple in Jerusalem, a river that begins as a trickle and gradually becomes deeper and wider as it moves eastward. This river represents the life‑giving presence of God and the spiritual restoration of His people.
Verse 10 specifically mentions fishermen standing on the riverbank from Engedi (an oasis near the Dead Sea known for its rich vegetation and abundant wildlife) to Eneglaim, a location thought to be in the same general vicinity. The fishermen symbolize those who will benefit from the river’s abundance. In biblical times fishing was an essential livelihood and often symbolized sustenance, provision, and abundance; the spreading of nets indicates a bountiful catch and prosperity.
The passage emphasizes that the fish caught will be “after their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many,” highlighting both the vastness and diversity of the catch. This abundance of fish signifies the plentiful blessings and prosperity that God will provide to His people.
Beyond the literal picture, the flowing river is a representation of the Holy Spirit and the blessings that flow from God’s presence. The great multitude of fish points to spiritual growth, fruitfulness, and the varied ways in which God’s blessings manifest in the lives of believers.
Application of this verse calls believers to trust in God’s desire to bless His people abundantly and to provide for their needs. Just as the fishermen spread their nets and caught many fish of different kinds, we are invited to serve faithfully, rely on God’s provision, and be open to the diverse forms of blessing He offers.
In summary, Ezekiel 47:10 conveys a powerful message of abundance, provision, and divine blessing. It encourages confidence in God’s faithfulness, the diligent spreading of our spiritual nets, and an appreciation for the varied ways He chooses to enrich our lives.
