Ezekiel 48:29
This is the land which ye shall divide by lot unto the tribes of Israel for inheritance, and these are their portions, saith the Lord God.
Ezekiel 48:29 (KJV)
Context
The book of Ezekiel records prophecies given to the prophet during the Babylonian exile. In chapters 40–48, Ezekiel receives a detailed vision of Israel’s future restoration, including the rebuilt temple, the return of God’s glory, and the division of the land among the tribes. Ezekiel 48:29 concludes that vision by summarizing the land’s allocation.
Meaning
“This is the land which ye shall divide by lot unto the tribes of Israel for inheritance” describes a specific, orderly process. The phrase “divide by lot” points to casting lots, a method ancient Israel used to discern God’s will in land distribution. The verse names the tribes and notes that the half-tribe of Joseph received two portions, showing that the allocation was precise and complete.
The word “inheritance” carries weight. The land was not a random possession but the fulfillment of God’s promise to give Canaan to Abraham’s descendants. Each tribe received its measured portion within the boundaries God set.
The closing phrase “saith the Lord GOD” emphasizes divine authority. The division was not arbitrary or humanly devised; God Himself ordained the boundaries and portions. This underscores His sovereignty and faithfulness in keeping His covenant promises.
Biblical connections
The vision in Ezekiel 40–48 echoes the earlier distribution of the land in Joshua and Numbers, when the tribes received their inheritances by lot. It also looks forward to the New Testament picture of believers receiving a spiritual inheritance. As Ephesians 1:3 says, God has blessed believers with every spiritual blessing in Christ, and each believer has a unique place in His household.
Application
God is a God of order and purpose. Just as He carefully divided the land for each tribe, He has a specific plan for each of His people. Believers can trust that He distributes spiritual blessings according to His will, giving each person a distinct calling and inheritance. This calls us to recognize and appreciate what God has given us, rather than comparing ourselves with others.
Reflection
Ezekiel 48:29 reveals God’s orderly plan to divide the land among the tribes as an inheritance. It reminds us of His sovereign hand in allocating blessings and calls us to embrace our individual callings, trusting in His faithful fulfillment of promises. The verse assures us that God’s promises are sure and that He provides for His people.
