Ezekiel 30:26

And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them among the countries; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Ezekiel 30:26 (KJV)

Ezekiel 30 contains prophecies of judgment against Egypt, a prominent power in the ancient world whose actions often affected the people of Israel. During Ezekiel’s time, Egypt was a powerful empire that exerted influence over neighbouring countries, including Israel, and had a history of opposing God’s people. In this verse, God declares His judgment against Egypt and reveals His plan to scatter and disperse the Egyptians among other nations.

The scattering and dispersing of the Egyptians signify a punishment for their actions and the consequences of their rebellion against God. In the ancient Near East, scattering a conquered people was a common practice that resulted in loss of identity, power, and stability. This judgment would serve as a means for the Egyptians to come to know the Lord. While the judgment may seem severe, God’s purpose is not solely punitive. Through this scattering, God intends to make Himself known to the Egyptians, suggesting that the dispersion would result in encounters with the true God, potentially leading to their repentance and acknowledgement of His sovereignty.

The ultimate purpose of this judgment is to make the Egyptians acknowledge that God is the Lord. By scattering them among the nations, God reveals His sovereignty and authority over all nations, including Egypt. This knowledge is not merely intellectual but is a recognition of God’s power, as He alone sets up kings and brings them down, strengthens and weakens kingdoms according to His will. The immediate historical context includes Babylon as the instrument of God’s judgment against Egypt.

  • God’s Judgment: The verse reminds us that God is just and will bring judgment upon nations and individuals for their actions. It serves as a reminder to align our lives with God’s will and seek His forgiveness when we fall short.

  • God’s Sovereignty: The scattering and dispersing of the Egyptians emphasize God’s control over all nations. It reminds us that regardless of the circumstances, God remains in control and works His purposes even through difficult times.

  • Repentance and Acknowledgment: The verse highlights the importance of recognizing God’s authority and acknowledging Him as the Lord. It encourages us to seek a genuine relationship with God and turn to Him in repentance.

Ezekiel 30:26 reveals God’s judgment against Egypt, His purpose to make Himself known to the Egyptians, and His ultimate sovereignty over all nations. It serves as a reminder of God’s justice and the importance of repentance and acknowledging Him as the Lord in our lives. For the reader, the verse calls for humility before God and trust in His righteous judgments, knowing that His purposes will ultimately be accomplished.
