Daniel 1:21

And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Daniel 1:21 (KJV)

The book of Daniel opens during the Babylonian captivity, when people of Judah were taken into exile. Daniel and his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were among the captives and were chosen to serve in the court of King Nebuchadnezzar. This verse concludes the opening chapter, summarizing Daniel’s life and faithfulness throughout his time in Babylon.

The Hebrew word translated “continued” is hayah, which can also mean “to be” or “to exist.” The verse states that Daniel continued until the first year of King Cyrus, marking the end of the narrative section in Daniel 1. It does not mean Daniel’s life ended then, for Daniel later received a vision in the third year of Cyrus’s reign (Daniel 10:1). Rather, it emphasizes that Daniel remained in service through the entire period of Babylonian rule and into the Persian era.

Faithfulness in adversity

Despite being taken captive and placed in a foreign land, Daniel remained faithful to God. He was determined to maintain his commitment to the Lord and his principles, even in the face of adversity. This verse highlights Daniel’s continued faithfulness throughout the reigns of different kings.

Length of service

The verse mentions that Daniel continued in his service until the first year of King Cyrus. This indicates a significant period of time, spanning multiple administrations. The reference to Cyrus points to the fall of the Babylonian Empire and the rise of the Persian Empire, under which Daniel also served.

God’s sovereignty

Daniel’s longevity in the royal court was not merely a result of his own abilities or circumstances. It was ultimately due to God’s providence and sovereign plan. God used Daniel’s faithfulness and wisdom to impact the rulers he served, as well as to fulfill His purposes in the unfolding events of history.

Daniel’s example challenges us to remain steadfast in our devotion to God, even in challenging environments. It reminds us that our faith is not dependent on our circumstances but on our trust in God’s sovereignty and His ability to sustain us. Daniel’s life also encourages us to seek opportunities to influence others for the glory of God, regardless of our positions or surroundings.
