Daniel 1:20
And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
Daniel 1:20 (KJV)
Context
The book of Daniel is set during the Babylonian captivity, when the Israelites were taken into exile in Babylon. Daniel and his friends—Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah—were among the captives chosen to serve in the king’s court. Despite living in a foreign land, they remained faithful to God and stood firm in their beliefs.
This verse concludes the opening chapter of Daniel, which describes how these young men were trained in Babylonian wisdom. King Nebuchadnezzar tested them and compared them to the native magicians and astrologers, who represented the best of Babylonian occult and intellectual expertise. The king found Daniel and his friends ten times better than all the wise men in his realm.
Meaning
The phrase “ten times better” is idiomatic, meaning vastly superior or surpassing in every way, rather than a precise mathematical measure. The king’s inquiry covered “all matters of wisdom and understanding,” showing that their excellence was comprehensive, not limited to one area. Their growth in knowledge and discretion was evident to the king, and they excelled beyond the king’s own counselors.
Their superior wisdom was not merely a product of their own abilities. Throughout the book of Daniel, we see God’s hand at work, granting them wisdom and favor. Daniel 1:17 records that God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom. Their excellence was a divine gift in response to their covenant loyalty, not a self-derived achievement.
Biblical connections
This verse foreshadows Daniel’s later role as an interpreter of dreams and visions, where he again surpasses the Babylonian wise men (Daniel 2). It also echoes the truth that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). True wisdom comes from God, not from human or occult sources.
Application
Their faithfulness to God and integrity serve as an example for us today. In a world that often challenges our faith and values, it is crucial to remain steadfast and true to our convictions, just as these young men did. When we honor God and seek His guidance, He can equip us beyond our natural abilities.
Although they faced challenges and trials, Daniel and his friends trusted in God’s timing and purposes. As we navigate our own journeys, it is essential to trust in God’s plans, even when circumstances seem uncertain or difficult. God can provide wisdom, understanding, and favor to those who trust in Him.
Reflection
Daniel 1:20 showcases how Daniel and his friends grew in wisdom and knowledge, gaining the respect of the king and surpassing the Babylonian magicians and astrologers. Their faithfulness, divine intervention, and unwavering integrity offer valuable lessons: trust in God’s provision, remain steadfast in faith, and rely on His perfect timing.
