Daniel 5:12
Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.
Daniel 5:12 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of the story of Belshazzar’s feast in Babylon. The king and his nobles drank from the temple vessels taken from Jerusalem and praised their own gods, when a mysterious hand wrote on the wall. The king’s wise men could not interpret the writing, but the queen, possibly the queen mother, remembered Daniel’s exceptional qualities and recommended him.
Meaning
This verse highlights several aspects of Daniel’s character and abilities:
Excellent spirit — Daniel possessed a spirit that was exceptional, likely attributed to his close relationship with God and his commitment to following God’s ways.
Knowledge and understanding — Daniel was known for his vast knowledge and understanding, acquired through education and devotion to seeking wisdom.
Interpreting dreams — Daniel had been gifted with the ability to interpret dreams, demonstrated earlier when he interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams (Daniel 2, 4).
Shewing of hard sentences — Daniel could explain complex and difficult concepts, unraveling mysteries that others found perplexing.
Dissolving of doubts — Daniel could dispel doubts and uncertainties by providing insightful answers and clarifications.
These qualities set the stage for Daniel to interpret the writing on the wall, which foretold the downfall of Belshazzar’s kingdom.
Biblical connections
Daniel’s wisdom was not merely natural but a gift from God, as he had a spirit of real grace and piety. The queen’s testimony confirms Daniel’s established reputation for divine insight, demonstrated earlier in interpreting Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams (Daniel 2 and 4). This verse serves as a turning point: the king, who had ignored God, is now forced to seek help from a man of God, showing that God’s servants are often called upon in times of crisis to reveal His truth.
Application
This verse encourages readers to value knowledge, understanding, and a close relationship with God, while recognizing the importance of using our gifts to serve others and bring glory to God. It challenges us to maintain a consistent testimony so that even in difficult circumstances, our godly character and wisdom are evident to others. True wisdom comes from God and is to be used for His glory, not for personal advancement. We are to be ready to speak God’s truth when called upon, even to those who have dishonored Him.
Reflection
Daniel 5:12 serves as a testament to Daniel’s character, wisdom, and divine gifting. It encourages believers to value knowledge, understanding, and a close relationship with God, while using our gifts and abilities to serve others and bring glory to God.
