Daniel 5:12
“Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.”
This verse is part of the story of Belshazzar’s feast, which took place in the city of Babylon. Belshazzar was the king of Babylon, and during this feast, he and his nobles used the vessels that had been taken from the temple in Jerusalem, which were dedicated to the worship of God. As they drank from these holy vessels and praised their own gods, a mysterious hand appeared and wrote on the wall.
In this particular verse, some of the king’s wise men and astrologers were unable to interpret the writing on the wall. However, the queen, possibly the queen mother, remembered Daniel’s exceptional qualities and recommended him to the king. The queen recognized Daniel as a man with an “excellent spirit” (meaning a divine spirit), knowledge, understanding, the ability to interpret dreams, and the skill to explain difficult concepts and dissolve doubts.
This verse highlights several important aspects of Daniel’s character and abilities:
Excellent spirit:Daniel possessed a spirit that was exceptional and beyond that of ordinary men. This was likely attributed to his close relationship with God and his commitment to following God’s ways.
Knowledge and understanding:Daniel was known for his vast knowledge and understanding, which he acquired through his education and his devotion to seeking wisdom. He was well-versed in various disciplines, including history, literature, and the wisdom of his time.
Interpreting dreams:Daniel had been gifted with the ability to interpret dreams. This gift had been demonstrated earlier in his life when he interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams (Daniel 2, 4). It was a unique talent that set him apart from others and showcased God’s wisdom working through him.
Shewing of hard sentences:Daniel had the ability to explain complex and difficult concepts, whether they were related to dreams, visions, or enigmatic writings. He possessed the skill to unravel mysteries and provide clear explanations that others found perplexing.
Dissolving of doubts:Daniel could dispel doubts and uncertainties by providing insightful answers and clarifications. His wisdom and understanding enabled him to resolve dilemmas and dilemmas faced by others.
This verse emphasizes Daniel’s exceptional qualities and sets the stage for the subsequent events in which Daniel is called upon to interpret the writing on the wall. Through his God-given abilities, Daniel would go on to reveal the meaning of the mysterious inscription, which foretold the downfall of Belshazzar’s kingdom.
Overall, Daniel 5:12 serves as a testament to Daniel’s character, wisdom, and divine gifting. It encourages readers to value knowledge, understanding, and a close relationship with God, while also recognizing the importance of using our gifts and abilities to serve others and bring glory to God.
