Daniel 5:10
Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
Daniel 5:10 (KJV)
Context
This verse takes place during the reign of King Belshazzar of Babylon, the son of Nebuchadnezzar. The setting is a lavish feast filled with idolatry and excess, held while the Babylonian Empire was declining. During the feast, a mysterious hand wrote a message on the wall, terrifying the king and his nobles. The queen—likely the queen mother, not one of the king’s wives—entered the banquet house because of the king’s outcry. Her dignified composure contrasts sharply with the king’s visible distress.
Meaning
The queen addresses the king with the customary royal greeting, “O king, live for ever,” a phrase used to show honor and respect. She then urges him not to let his thoughts trouble him or his countenance change, seeking to calm his visible alarm. Her words reveal her prudence and authority, as she speaks confidently in the presence of the king and his lords. She does not dismiss the gravity of the situation but encourages the king to remain composed so that he can seek a solution.
Biblical connections
The queen then directs Belshazzar to Daniel, reminding him that Daniel has the spirit of the holy gods and that Nebuchadnezzar had made him master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers (Daniel 5:11-12). This connection shows that God had already provided a faithful servant to interpret His message. The queen’s intervention sets the stage for Daniel’s arrival and the interpretation of the writing, demonstrating that God uses unexpected people to bring His truth.
Application
The queen’s calmness in a crisis reminds believers to seek godly counsel and remain composed when facing troubling circumstances. Her advice to the king is not a promise of safety but a call to turn to the one who can interpret God’s message. In times of distress, we should not let fear paralyze us but should seek wisdom from those who know God. The verse also warns that human composure cannot avert divine judgment; God’s warnings are serious and should lead to repentance.
Reflection
God’s sovereignty over earthly kingdoms is clear in this passage. The queen, though not the main prophet, plays a vital role in directing the king to Daniel. This encourages us to recognize that God can use anyone to accomplish His purposes, even in moments of crisis. As we face our own uncertainties, we can trust that God reveals truth through His servants and calls us to respond with humility and faith.
