Daniel 5:7

The king cried aloud to bring in the Astrologers, the Caldeans, and the soothsayers: and the king spake and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoeuer shall reade this writing, and shewe me the interpretation thereof, shall bee clothed with scarlet, and haue a chaine of gold about his necke, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdome. Daniel 5:7 (KJV)

This verse is part of the historical account in the Book of Daniel, where King Belshazzar of Babylon held a great feast for a thousand of his nobles. During the feast, a mysterious occurrence took place that alarmed the king and the guests. A hand appeared and wrote on the wall of the palace, and this event troubled Belshazzar to the point where his countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him.

In response to this extraordinary event, King Belshazzar called for his astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. These were individuals known for their supposed ability to interpret dreams, decipher omens, and provide insight into mystical events. Belshazzar sought the interpretation of the writing on the wall, promising great rewards to whoever could provide an accurate interpretation.

The terms offered by the king – being clothed with scarlet, having a chain of gold around the neck, and being appointed as the third ruler in the kingdom – were significant positions of honor and authority. Belshazzar, desperate for an explanation, was willing to grant such prestigious rewards to anyone who could unravel the mystery.

This verse highlights the spiritual and intellectual bankruptcy of the king and his reliance on pagan divination methods rather than seeking wisdom from the true God. It contrasts the wisdom and faithfulness of Daniel, who was absent from the feast but was later summoned to interpret the writing.

The subsequent verses reveal that Daniel, a man of unwavering faith in God, was able to provide the interpretation of the writing on the wall. He informed Belshazzar that the message conveyed a divine judgment against him and his kingdom for their arrogance, idolatry, and failure to honor the God of Israel. Daniel also announced that the kingdom would be divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

This event serves as a reminder of the sovereignty of God and the consequences of ignoring His divine authority. Belshazzar’s reliance on pagan astrologers and soothsayers proved futile in the face of God’s judgment. The story emphasizes the importance of seeking wisdom and guidance from God and His Word rather than turning to worldly sources that offer empty promises.

In conclusion, Daniel 5:8 depicts the desperate search of King Belshazzar for someone who could interpret the writing on the wall. The verse highlights the king’s reliance on pagan divination and the significant rewards he promised to anyone who could provide an accurate interpretation. This account underscores the contrast between human wisdom and God’s wisdom, revealing the ultimate futility of relying on worldly sources in the face of God’s divine judgment.
