Daniel 5:27

TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

Daniel 5:27 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Belshazzar’s feast, where God’s handwriting appeared on the wall. Daniel interpreted the words, and TEKEL was the third word. The Aramaic term TEKEL is related to the Hebrew “shekel,” a standard unit of weight used in commerce, especially for weighing precious metals. The imagery is that of a divine balance, where a person’s moral and spiritual worth is measured against God’s standard of righteousness.

God had examined Belshazzar’s actions and found him lacking. The phrase “found wanting” signifies that he fell short of God’s standards. This is not a general statement about human frailty but a specific, divine assessment of a particular individual’s character and actions. The balances are God’s, and the standard is His holiness. The verdict is decisive: Belshazzar’s life and reign do not measure up to what God requires.

Belshazzar’s arrogance and disregard for God’s authority resulted in his downfall. Despite witnessing the judgment on his father, Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar failed to learn from the past. This verse serves as a warning against pride and self-centeredness, reminding us that those who exalt themselves will be humbled.

While this passage recounts a historical event, it also carries spiritual significance. It urges us to reflect on our own lives and conduct regular self-assessment. Are we living according to God’s standards? Are our actions aligned with His will? The verse encourages us to examine ourselves honestly and seek God’s forgiveness and guidance. It also points to the need for a righteousness that is not one’s own, as all fall short of God’s glory.

Daniel 5:27 serves as a powerful reminder of God’s judgment, the importance of moral integrity, the consequences of pride, and the need for self-reflection. It prompts us to live in a manner that aligns with God’s principles and to seek His grace and guidance in all aspects of our lives.
