Daniel 5:25

And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

Daniel 5:25 (KJV)

Daniel 5:25 records the mysterious inscription written by a hand on the wall during King Belshazzar’s feast. Belshazzar, ruler of Babylon, hosted a great feast and profaned the gold and silver vessels taken from the Jerusalem temple, using them to drink wine and praise gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. In response, God sent a hand that wrote this inscription, causing the king great fear. The wise men of Babylon could not interpret the writing, so Daniel was summoned. He read the words: “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.”

MENE means “numbered” or “counted,” indicating that God had numbered the days of Belshazzar’s kingdom and brought it to an end. TEKEL means “weighed” or “shekel,” signifying that Belshazzar had been weighed on the scales and found wanting. UPHARSIN (the plural of PERES) means “divided,” foretelling that the kingdom would be divided and given to the Medes and Persians. The interpretation follows in Daniel 5:26-28, and the historical fulfillment is recorded in Daniel 5:30-31, where Belshazzar is slain that very night and Darius the Mede receives the kingdom.

The writing was not in a known language but was a supernatural revelation, and only Daniel, empowered by God, could interpret it. This underscores the theme that true wisdom comes from God.

The inscription is a divine judgment pronounced against Belshazzar for his arrogance and sacrilege. It demonstrates that God is sovereign over human rulers and holds them accountable, contrasting human pride with divine authority. It serves as a warning against pride, idolatry, and the misuse of what is sacred, calling readers to honor God rather than exalt themselves and to heed divine warnings.

This verse is a powerful reminder of God’s holiness and justice. It shows that God’s judgments are certain and will be fulfilled. As we reflect on this passage, we are invited to examine our own lives, recognize that God sees our hearts, and live in humble obedience to Him.
