Daniel 9:21
Yea whiles I was speaking in praier, euen the man Gabriel, whom I had seene in the vision at the beginning, being caused to flie swiftly, touched me about the time of the euening oblation. Daniel 9:21 (KJV)
In Daniel 9 we find Daniel praying and seeking understanding from God concerning the prophecy of the seventy weeks. This verse records Daniel’s earnest prayer and the immediate response he receives from the angel Gabriel. Gabriel is the same messenger who appeared to Daniel earlier in the book (see Daniel 8:16), and he is consistently presented as a divine messenger delivering important revelations.
Gabriel’s swift flight emphasizes the urgency and importance of the message he brings. The description that he was “caused to fly swiftly” shows God’s attentiveness and responsiveness to Daniel’s prayer, dispatching the angel promptly to provide an answer. The encounter occurs “about the time of the evening oblation,” a phrase that refers to the evening sacrifice or prayer offered at the temple in Jerusalem. This was a significant moment of devotion and a time when the people sought God’s mercy and forgiveness. Daniel’s prayer aligning with this time reflects his deep devotion.
The physical touch of Gabriel on Daniel signifies a personal encounter and God’s direct involvement. This touch may symbolize assurance that God hears the prayers of His people, acknowledges their dedication, and provides guidance and understanding. The episode confirms that God is faithful in hearing and answering prayers according to His perfect timing.
From this passage we learn several practical lessons. First, we are encouraged to persist in prayer and to earnestly seek God’s wisdom and guidance, following Daniel’s example of devoted prayer. Second, the swift response of Gabriel reminds us of God’s faithfulness in answering prayers, responding according to His perfect timing. Finally, the personal nature of the angel’s touch highlights the intimate relationship God desires with each believer, assuring us of His presence, guidance, and love.
