Daniel 9:8

O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.

Daniel 9:8 (KJV)

Daniel prayed this confession during the Babylonian exile, after he understood from Jeremiah’s prophecies that the seventy years of captivity were nearing their end (Daniel 9:2; Jeremiah 25:11-12). He identified with his people’s sin and sought God’s mercy on their behalf.

“Confusion of face” means open shame and disgrace. Daniel declared that this shame rightly belonged to the people of Israel, including their kings, princes, and fathers, because they had sinned against the Lord. The repetition of the phrase throughout the prayer emphasizes how deeply the nation’s guilt affected Daniel and shows that every rank of society was implicated in the disobedience that led to exile.

Daniel did not exclude himself from this confession. He prayed as one with his people, acknowledging their collective failure to follow God’s commandments. This humility models the proper response to sin: admitting guilt, accepting the shame it brings, and turning back to God.

The verse sets the stage for the rest of Daniel’s prayer, where he pleads for God’s forgiveness and restoration (Daniel 9:9-19). It also echoes the pattern of confession found throughout Scripture, where God’s people acknowledge their sins and appeal to His mercy.

Daniel’s prayer teaches us to confess sin honestly, without excusing ourselves or shifting blame. When we sin, we can bring our shame to God, trusting that He is faithful to forgive those who repent. This verse also reminds us that our actions affect others, so we should pray for our communities and nations with the same humility and intercession that Daniel showed.

Consider how Daniel’s example challenges us to take sin seriously, to identify with the failures of our people, and to seek God’s mercy with a contrite heart. His prayer assures us that sincere repentance opens the way to reconciliation with God.
