Daniel 9:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him”

Context:The book of Daniel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, attributed to the prophet Daniel who lived during the Babylonian exile. In Daniel 9, the prophet Daniel is shown to be studying the prophecies of Jeremiah and realizes that the seventy years of Jerusalem’s desolation, prophesied by Jeremiah, are coming to an end. In response, Daniel turns to God in prayer, seeking His mercy and forgiveness for the sins of the people of Israel.

Analysis:

1. God’s Ownership: The verse begins by acknowledging that “To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses.” This statement recognizes that mercy and forgiveness are inherent characteristics of God. The word “belong” implies that these qualities are an essential part of His nature and that He possesses an abundant supply of them.

2. Rebellion against God: The verse goes on to acknowledge that despite God’s ownership of mercies and forgivenesses, the people of Israel have rebelled against Him. This confession highlights the people’s disobedience and their failure to live according to God’s laws and commandments.

3. God’s Response: Despite the rebellion, Daniel acknowledges God’s willingness to extend His mercies and forgiveness to the people. It emphasizes that God’s compassion is not dependent on the people’s merits but is an expression of His grace and love.

4. Application: This verse serves as a reminder that even when we have rebelled against God, we can turn to Him with repentance and seek His forgiveness. It demonstrates God’s character of mercy and His willingness to forgive us when we acknowledge our sins and approach Him with a contrite heart.

Overall, Daniel 9:9 highlights the tension between human rebellion and God’s mercy. It offers hope and reassurance that despite our failings, God is ready to extend His forgiveness and mercy when we humble ourselves and seek Him.
