Daniel 9:10

Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

Daniel 9:10 (KJV)

The ninth chapter of Daniel records the prophet’s prayer of confession and intercession for Israel during the Babylonian exile. Daniel sought God’s forgiveness and restoration for his people, identifying with their sins even though he personally remained faithful.

In verse 10, Daniel confesses that Israel did not obey the voice of the Lord their God and failed to walk in His laws. The phrase “to walk in his laws” indicates that obedience was not merely intellectual assent but a way of life—a continual walking in God’s statutes. God had set His law before the people as a clear standard, leaving them without excuse for failing to follow it.

The prophets served as God’s messengers, communicating His will, warnings, and calls for repentance. By mentioning them, Daniel emphasizes that the people were well aware of God’s expectations and the consequences of disobedience. Disobedience to the prophets was equivalent to despising the Lord Himself and refusing to hear His voice, which was highly provoking to Him. God’s revelation through His prophets was meant to guide and correct His people, but they chose to disregard it.

This verse is part of a larger prayer where Daniel identifies with the sins of his people, acknowledging that they had not listened to God’s servants. The context is the Babylonian exile, which Daniel understands as a consequence of the people’s disobedience to God’s voice through the prophets. This verse serves as a model of corporate confession, where one person acknowledges the sins of the community and appeals to God’s mercy.

The message of Daniel 9:10 applies to believers today. Just as the Israelites received God’s Word through the prophets, we have been given the Bible, which provides guidance for our lives. It is essential to obey God’s commands and walk in His ways. Disobedience hinders our relationship with God and can lead to negative consequences. Therefore, we should be diligent in studying and applying God’s Word, seeking to align our actions with His will.

Although Daniel acknowledges the disobedience of the Israelites, he also pleads for God’s forgiveness and restoration. Daniel 9:10 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands. It highlights the need for repentance and seeking forgiveness when we fall short. By studying this verse, we can learn from the mistakes of the Israelites and strive to align our lives with God’s will.
