Amos 5:22

“Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.”

Amos 5:22 (KJV) says: Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

This verse is a part of a larger passage where the prophet Amos delivers a message of judgment and rebuke to the people of Israel for their unfaithfulness and hypocrisy in their worship practices. The people had been engaging in religious rituals and offerings, but their hearts were far from God, and they were also involved in various forms of injustice and oppression.

Here are some key points to consider in understanding this verse:

Hypocritical worship: The people of Israel were offering burnt offerings, meat offerings, and peace offerings to God. These were the prescribed forms of worship and sacrifices in the Mosaic Law. However, their worship had become superficial and hypocritical. They were going through the motions of offering sacrifices without genuine repentance or a heart of obedience to God.

God’s rejection: Despite their offerings and sacrifices, God declares that He will not accept them. He refuses to regard their peace offerings and animal sacrifices. This is because their actions were disconnected from the true spirit of worship and righteousness.

The importance of genuine devotion: God is not interested in mere outward religious rituals or sacrifices devoid of genuine devotion and righteousness. He desires a sincere heart and a life that reflects His character. In Isaiah 1:11-17, another prophet speaks of God’s disapproval of hypocritical worship, stating that God desires justice, mercy, and righteousness rather than empty sacrifices.

The connection between worship and justice: The people of Israel were not only engaging in empty worship but were also involved in acts of injustice, which further tainted their offerings. In verses preceding Amos 5:22, the prophet speaks of the people trampling on the poor, perverting justice, and accepting bribes. True worship should go hand in hand with justice and righteousness.

Spiritual significance: This verse highlights the spiritual reality that external religious acts, without the proper heart attitude, are meaningless to God. He desires true devotion, humility, and obedience from His people.
