Habakkuk 3:10
The mountaines sawe thee, and they trembled: the ouerflowing of the water passed by: the deepe vttered his voyce, and lift vp his hands on high. Habakkuk 3:10 (KJV)
Context: The book of Habakkuk is one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. The prophet Habakkuk lived during a time of great social and moral decay in Judah. In this chapter Habakkuk offers a prayer to God, acknowledging His power and sovereignty.
Observations: The verse depicts a vivid image of the majestic mountains witnessing the presence of God and trembling in awe and reverence, highlighting that even nature recognises His majesty. The phrase “the overflowing of the water passed by” uses the imagery of overflowing waters to refer to God’s deliverance and judgment, and may also represent the nations that rise against God’s people but are ultimately subdued by Him. The “deep” likely refers to the sea or the abyss; its utterance of voice and lifting of hands on high symbolizes a powerful force that acknowledges God’s authority and submits to His command.
Interpretation: Habakkuk’s prayer reveals his deep understanding of God’s sovereignty and power. The trembling mountains and the overflowing waters signify the awe‑inspiring impact of God’s presence on creation. The mention of the sea uttering its voice underscores that all creation, even the forces of nature, recognises and submits to God’s authority. This contrast between the power of God and the weakness and transience of earthly powers reminds us that God is greater than any human or natural force.
Application: Believers should cultivate a deep sense of reverence and awe for God’s power and majesty. Just as the mountains trembled, we are called to approach God with humility, recognising His greatness. The recognition that even nature submits to God’s authority should inspire trust in His sovereignty. In the face of opposition or turmoil, we can find comfort and peace knowing that God is in control of all things, including the challenges we face. Like the overflowing waters subdued by God, He is able to bring order and deliverance in the midst of chaos, offering believers assurance that He remains sovereign over every circumstance.
