Joshua 3:14

Joshua 3:14 (KJV)

The book of Joshua continues the story of the Israelites after Moses led them out of Egypt. Joshua became the leader after Moses died, and his task was to bring the people into the Promised Land. Joshua 3:14 describes a key moment as the nation prepares to cross the Jordan River.

This event comes after forty years of wilderness wandering. The people had camped near the Jordan, and now they were leaving their tents and moving toward the water. They did not wait for the river to become calm or shallow; they moved forward because God had commanded them through Joshua.

The verse says the people removed from their tents to pass over Jordan. This simple action shows obedience and trust. They had to break camp, gather their families and belongings, and walk toward a flooded river. The text does not say they hesitated. Their movement was a visible act of faith, showing that they believed God would do what He had promised.

The priests bearing the ark of the covenant went before the people. The ark was a sacred chest that held the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. It represented God’s presence and His covenant with Israel. The priests were from the tribe of Levi, and they had the special duty of carrying the ark. Their position at the front of the procession showed that God’s presence led the way, and the people were to follow Him.

The ark also reminded the people of God’s faithfulness. It contained the law, which was the foundation of their relationship with God. As the priests carried it ahead, the people could see that God was with them. The order of march was clear: God first, then the people.

The crossing of the Jordan River is a direct parallel to the crossing of the Red Sea, recorded in Exodus 14. At the Red Sea, Moses stretched out his hand, and God divided the waters so the people could cross on dry ground. Here, the priests would step into the Jordan, and God would stop the water. Both events show God’s power to deliver His people and His faithfulness to His covenant.

Joshua 3:14 teaches several lessons for believers today. First, preparation and obedience matter. Just as the Israelites prepared to cross the Jordan, we must be diligent in our preparations and obedient to God’s leading when we face challenges and transitions. Second, we can trust God’s presence. The ark reminds us that God is faithful and guides us in every step of our journey.

Third, spiritual leadership and submission are important. The priests’ role in carrying the ark shows the value of honoring those whom God appoints to lead in matters of faith. Fourth, we should approach God with reverence and awe, recognizing His holiness and sovereignty. Fifth, we are called to follow God’s commands. The ark contained the law, and as believers, we are to live in obedience to God’s Word.

The priests did not wait for the waters to part before stepping in. They moved forward in obedience, and the miracle followed. This teaches that faith often requires action before we see the outcome. When the path ahead seems blocked, we can trust that God goes before us. Our role is to follow in faith, knowing that He will make a way.

Consider a situation where you face an obstacle that seems impossible. The Israelites stood before a flooded river, but they moved forward because God had spoken. The ark went ahead of them, and God’s presence led the way. In your own life, you can trust that God is with you, even when you cannot see the solution. He is faithful to His promises, and He will guide you through the challenges you face. The key is to take the next step of obedience, trusting that God will do what He has said.
