Zechariah 2:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:52

“For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.”

Context:The book of Zechariah is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. It was written by the prophet Zechariah, who delivered messages of encouragement and hope to the people of Israel during the period of their return from exile in Babylon. Zechariah 2:5 is part of a vision Zechariah received, which describes the future restoration of Jerusalem and the promise of God’s presence among His people.

Symbolism:In this verse, God declares that He will be like a protective wall of fire around Jerusalem. Fire is often associated with divine presence, power, and judgment in the Bible. This imagery conveys the idea that God will provide security and defence for His people. The phrase “will be the glory in the midst of her” signifies that God’s presence will dwell among His people, bringing them honour, joy, and blessing.

Historical Application:At the time Zechariah delivered this message, Jerusalem was in ruins after the Babylonian exile. The city walls were destroyed, leaving the inhabitants vulnerable to attacks from enemies. This verse assures the people that God Himself will safeguard Jerusalem and become its divine protection. It was a message of hope and assurance that God would restore and rebuild the city, making it a place of His glory.

  • Spiritual Application:Beyond the historical context, this verse carries broader spiritual significance. It reveals God’s character and His commitment to protecting and blessing His people. The promise of God being a wall of fire implies His divine protection against spiritual adversaries. It also reminds believers that God’s presence is not only with the physical city of Jerusalem but also in the midst of His people. As believers, we can take comfort in knowing that God is our ultimate defender and that His glory resides within us through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
  • Application for Today:Zechariah’s words can encourage us today to trust in God’s protection and presence. Just as He promised to be a wall of fire around Jerusalem, God is faithful to protect and guard His children. In times of trouble, uncertainty, or spiritual attacks, we can find refuge in His presence. Additionally, this verse reminds us of the importance of cultivating a close relationship with God. We should seek His glory and allow His presence to dwell in the midst of our lives, shaping our character and guiding our steps.

In summary, Zechariah 2:5 speaks of God’s promise to be a protective wall of fire around Jerusalem, symbolising His divine presence and safeguarding His people. This verse serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, His desire to protect and bless His children, and the need for us to seek His presence and glory in our lives today.
