Listen to this article

And said vnto him, Run, speake to this young man, saying; Ierusalem shall be inhabited as townes without walles, for the multitude of men and cattell therein. Zechariah 2:4 (KJV)

Context: Zechariah was a prophet who delivered messages from God to the people of Judah during the time of the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple after the Babylonian exile. The book of Zechariah contains a series of visions and messages given to the prophet.

Symbolism: In this verse an angel delivers a message to be spoken to a young man, emphasizing the future prosperity and growth of Jerusalem. The phrase “Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls” symbolizes the restoration and expansion of the city beyond its former fortified state.

Rebuilding Jerusalem: After the exile Jerusalem lay in ruins, its walls destroyed, and the city had long been a target because of its strategic location. The promise that the city will be “inhabited as towns without walls” brings hope that it will no longer need defensive walls, for a multitude of people and livestock will dwell there, indicating abundant security and flourishing life.

Spiritual Significance: Beyond the literal rebuilding, the verse points to God’s faithfulness to His people and His plans for their future. It signifies a time of abundance, growth, and security, where God’s presence and blessings are so evident that traditional defenses become unnecessary.

Application: Believers today can draw lessons from this promise. It reminds us that God is the ultimate source of security, provision, and prosperity. Just as Jerusalem was promised a future without walls because of the great multitude, we can trust in God’s promises of abundance and protection in our own lives, confident that He will fulfill His word in His perfect timing.

In summary, Zechariah 2:4 conveys a message of hope and restoration for Jerusalem, portraying a future of growth, security, and prosperity. The verse underscores God’s faithfulness and His ability to fulfill His promises for His people.
