Zechariah 2:2
Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.
Zechariah 2:2 (KJV)
Context
Zechariah ministered among the Jews who had returned from exile in Babylon, alongside the prophet Haggai, encouraging the people to rebuild the temple. In Zechariah 2, the prophet sees a man holding a measuring line, and in this verse he asks where the man is going. The reply is that the man is going to measure Jerusalem to determine its breadth and length.
Meaning
The measuring line was a common tool for defining boundaries or the dimensions of a building. Here it signals that God is carefully assessing Jerusalem and its people. The immediate context, however, shows that this measuring is not a threat. The following verses declare that Jerusalem will be inhabited as towns without walls, that the Lord will be a wall of fire around her, and that He will dwell in her midst (Zechariah 2:4-5). The act of measuring therefore symbolizes God’s care, ownership, and protection, and His intention to rebuild and restore Jerusalem after the exile.
The man with the measuring line is likely an angelic messenger. Zechariah’s question shows both his freedom to inquire and the messenger’s willingness to answer. The measurement is not merely literal; it points to the spiritual reality of God’s people being measured according to His word and purposes. God knows the exact dimensions of Jerusalem because He is sovereign over its restoration.
Biblical connections
The imagery of measuring appears elsewhere in Scripture to denote God’s assessment and preservation. In Hebrews 12:22, the heavenly Jerusalem is described as the city of the living God, and in Revelation 11:1, John is told to measure the temple of God and the altar. These passages connect to Zechariah’s vision, showing that God’s measuring is a sign of His care and His plan to dwell among His people.
Application
This vision is a call to self-examination. It prompts the Israelites, and readers today, to consider whether their lives are aligned with God’s purposes. God is actively involved in the rebuilding and restoration of His people, and He carefully examines every aspect of their lives and spiritual condition. The measuring line encourages believers to evaluate their attitudes, actions, and faithfulness to God’s commands, knowing that He measures His people according to His word.
Reflection
The broader context of Zechariah’s visions was given to encourage the returned exiles with hope for restoration and future glory. This verse should be understood as a message of hope and assurance, not of judgment. God is intimately concerned with His people and is actively working to restore and protect them. The measuring of Jerusalem points forward to the ultimate fulfillment in the new Jerusalem, where God dwells with His people forever.
