Zechariah 6:5

Listen to this article

“And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.”

Context:The book of Zechariah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Zechariah was a prophet who ministered during the post-exilic period when the Israelites were returning from Babylonian captivity. The book contains a series of visions that Zechariah received from God.

The Vision:In Zechariah 6, the prophet sees a vision of four chariots coming out from between two mountains of bronze. Each chariot is pulled by different-coloured horses: red, black, white, and dappled. In verse 5, the angel explains the significance of these chariots and horses to Zechariah.

Symbolic Meaning:The chariots and horses in this vision represent divine forces or spirits that are sent out from God’s presence to carry out His purposes on the earth. The number four often symbolises completeness or fullness in the Bible. These spirits are described as coming from “standing before the Lord of all the earth,” indicating their close proximity to God’s presence and their readiness to fulfil His commands.

Heavenly Messengers:The four spirits mentioned here are often interpreted as angelic beings or divine messengers who are entrusted with specific tasks. While the exact nature of these spirits is not explicitly stated in the text, they can be understood as heavenly beings commissioned by God to accomplish His will.

Symbolic Colours:The colours of the horses—red, black, white, and dappled—may also carry symbolic significance. Colours are often used symbolically in biblical visions. While the specific meaning of these colours in this context is not explicitly explained, they may represent different aspects of God’s purposes, such as judgement, purification, righteousness, and divine intervention.

God’s Sovereignty:This vision highlights God’s sovereignty over the nations and His active involvement in human affairs. The chariots and horses depict the spiritual forces that God employs to accomplish His plans and execute His judgements. It serves as a reminder to Zechariah and the people of Israel that God is in control and will fulfil His promises.

Application:While this vision was originally given to Zechariah in a specific historical context, it can also have broader applications for believers today. It reminds us of God’s power, His involvement in the world, and the spiritual forces at work in carrying out His purposes. It encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and seek His guidance and direction in our lives.

  • In summary, Zechariah 6:5 conveys a vision of four spirits going forth from the presence of the Lord to accomplish His purposes. It underscores God’s sovereignty and active involvement in the world, and it encourages believers to trust in Him and seek His guidance in their lives.
