Zechariah 6:1

And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.

Context

The book of Zechariah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written during the post-exilic period when the Israelites were returning from Babylonian captivity. Zechariah’s prophecies encouraged and instructed the people in rebuilding the temple and renewing their commitment to God. This verse is part of a series of eight night visions given to the prophet.

Meaning

Zechariah sees a vision of four chariots coming out from between two mountains. Chariots often represent warfare, judgment, or divine intervention in biblical imagery. Here, the chariots likely represent God’s sovereign power and His purposes being carried out on earth. The fact that there are four chariots could signify completeness, as the number four often represents wholeness or totality in the Bible. The mountains mentioned in the verse are described as “mountains of brass.” Brass is a strong and enduring metal, symbolizing strength and stability. The mountains of brass could represent the unshakable foundation of God’s authority and His unwavering justice. The vision sets the stage for the following verses, where the chariots are identified as the four spirits of heaven going out from standing in the presence of the Lord of the whole world (Zechariah 6:5).
