Zechariah 8:20

Thus saith the Lord of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities:

Zechariah 8:20 (KJV)

Zechariah ministered to the Israelites returning from Babylonian exile to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. His book carries messages of encouragement and hope for the restoration of God’s people. This verse belongs to a larger section in Zechariah 8 that describes the future blessings of Jerusalem and the nations coming to seek the Lord.

The opening phrase “Thus saith the LORD of hosts” signals that the proclamation comes directly from God. The title “Lord of hosts” presents Him as the sovereign ruler over all heavenly and earthly powers, giving the promise divine authority and certainty. The expression “It shall yet come to pass” points to a future fulfillment beyond the immediate post-exilic rebuilding. God assures His people that a time will arrive when a very great multitude will be gathered.

The clause “that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities” envisions a massive gathering from diverse locations. It implies peoples from various nations joining together, possibly to worship the Lord or to seek His presence alongside the people of Israel. The verse sets the stage for the following verse, where people from many cities say, “Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts; I will go also” (Zechariah 8:21). This highlights the drawing power of God’s presence and the missionary nature of His people.

While the original context referred to the physical restoration of Jerusalem and the influx of residents, the verse also points forward to a time when people from all nations will gather in worship and seek God. It highlights the universal scope of God’s salvation and the future acknowledgment of the Lord by many peoples. The prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment in the coming of Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, a way was opened for all nations to be reconciled to God, and the spread of the Gospel demonstrates the gathering of peoples from every corner of the earth.

Today the Church embodies this gathering. Believers from every nation are united as one body in Christ, reflecting the unity and diversity envisioned in Zechariah’s prophecy. This verse encourages believers to have confidence in God’s promises and to participate in the mission of God by welcoming and joining with others who are drawn to the Lord. The certainty of God’s promise calls for patient faith and active witness, trusting that He will gather a great multitude from many cities and nations.

Zechariah 8:20 foretells a future time when a very great multitude of men from many cities and nations will come together. Initially it spoke of Jerusalem’s restoration, but it also anticipates a broader, universal gathering of peoples to worship the Lord, a reality ultimately realized in Christ and the worldwide Church, revealing God’s plan for unity and the global reach of His message.
