Listen to this article

“And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts: I will go also.”

Historical Context:Zechariah was a prophet who lived during the time when the Israelites were returning from their exile in Babylon. His prophecies focused on the restoration of Jerusalem and the spiritual renewal of the people. In Zechariah 8, the prophet speaks of God’s promises of future blessings and restoration for His people.

  • Unity and Fellowship:

Zechariah 8:21 emphasizes unity and fellowship among the people. The verse describes a scenario where the inhabitants of one city encourage each other to go to another city to pray before the Lord. This demonstrates a sense of solidarity and a shared commitment to seek God’s presence and guidance together. It highlights the importance of communal worship and the unity of God’s people.

The Desire to Seek the Lord:The verse emphasizes the eagerness and urgency of the people to seek the Lord’s presence. They express their desire to go speedily to pray and seek the Lord of hosts. This portrays a deep longing for a relationship with God and a recognition of His authority and power as the Lord of hosts, the Lord of heavenly armies. It reflects a genuine hunger for God’s presence and a sincere commitment to seeking His will.

Leading by Example:The last part of the verse says, “I will go also.” This statement indicates personal commitment and leadership by example. The people are not only encouraging others to seek the Lord, but they are also willing to actively participate in this pursuit themselves. This demonstrates the importance of personal responsibility and accountability in matters of faith. It encourages individuals to take the initiative and be actively engaged in seeking God’s presence.

Application:

  • Zechariah 8:21 serves as an inspiration for believers today. It encourages us to prioritise unity and fellowship within the Church, supporting and encouraging one another in our spiritual journey. It reminds us of the importance of communal worship and the power of collective prayer. We should have a deep desire to seek the Lord’s presence and be willing to lead by example, actively participating in our pursuit of God.

In summary, Zechariah 8:21 highlights the importance of unity, fellowship, and the eagerness to seek the Lord’s presence. It calls believers to encourage one another, to actively participate in seeking God’s will, and to lead by example. May we be a people who are united in prayer and wholeheartedly seek the Lord in our lives.
