Zechariah 10:8

I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.

Zechariah 10:8 (KJV)

Zechariah ministered during the post-exilic period, when the returned exiles were rebuilding Jerusalem and the temple. His prophecies encouraged and exhorted the people in that work. Zechariah 10:8 belongs to a larger section, chapters 9 through 11, which focuses on the restoration of God’s people and the establishment of His kingdom.

The word translated “hiss” can also mean “whistle” or “signal.” It is a call or signal used to summon someone. The Targum renders it as “I will cry or call for them.” This imagery is often understood as a shepherd calling his sheep, or as a keeper gathering bees with a hissing sound. It denotes God’s active role in calling His scattered people back to Himself. The call is described as soft, sweet, and melodious, a sound of love, grace, and mercy, bringing peace, pardon, life, and salvation. It is not a difficult task for God; it is accomplished by His mere signal.

The phrase “I have redeemed them” grounds the gathering in redemption. God’s call to His people is not arbitrary; it flows from His act of deliverance. In the immediate context, this refers to God’s redemption of the Israelites from exile and the restoration of their relationship with Him. The final clause, “they shall increase as they have increased,” promises that the people will be as numerous as they were before, echoing the multiplication of Israel in Egypt. This is not merely a blessing but a fulfillment of God’s covenant promises.

The verse emphasizes God’s initiative: He calls, He gathers, He redeems, and He multiplies. This pattern connects to the broader biblical theme of redemption preceding effectual calling. Those whom Christ has redeemed are called by the Holy Spirit. The increase promised is a restoration to former numbers, showing that God’s covenant faithfulness endures even after judgment and exile.

  • Divine Initiative in Restoration: Zechariah 10:8 highlights God’s active role in the restoration of His people. It emphasizes that it is God Himself who calls and gathers His people, indicating His sovereignty and care over them. As believers, we can find assurance and confidence in knowing that God takes the initiative to restore and redeem us.

  • God’s Redemption: The phrase “I have redeemed them” underscores the theme of redemption in Zechariah’s message. It reminds us that God is a Redeemer who rescues and delivers His people from bondage and exile. In the broader biblical context, it points to the ultimate redemption accomplished through Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.

  • Growth and Multiplication: The statement “they shall increase as they have increased” suggests that God’s people will experience growth and multiplication. This can be understood in both a physical and spiritual sense. Physically, it may refer to the restoration of the nation of Israel. Spiritually, it signifies the growth of God’s people in faith, maturity, and influence as they follow Him and live according to His will.

While Zechariah’s prophecy had immediate relevance for the Israelites of his time, it also holds broader implications for believers today. Just as God promised to gather and restore His people in Zechariah’s time, we can trust in His faithfulness to restore and renew us in our personal lives. No matter what circumstances we face, God is actively involved in our restoration and brings about growth and blessing.

Zechariah’s declaration of God’s redemption reminds us of the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, where He redeemed humanity from sin and offered the gift of salvation. As believers, we can have confidence in God’s redemptive power and the assurance of forgiveness and eternal life through faith in Jesus.

The promise of growth and increase challenges us to embrace spiritual growth and maturity in our relationship with God. We should seek to grow in knowledge, faith, character, and love for God and others. God desires His people to thrive and make an impact in the world around them.

Zechariah 10:8 emphasizes God’s active role in the restoration and redemption of His people. It encourages believers to trust in His faithfulness, rely on His redemption, and pursue spiritual growth. The verse offers hope and encouragement, assuring believers that God is actively working to gather, redeem, and multiply His people.
