Zechariah 10:7

And they of Ephraim shall be like a mightie man, and their heart shall reioyce as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad, their heart shall reioyce in the Lord. Zechariah 10:7 (KJV)

Zechariah is an Old Testament prophetic book written by the prophet Zechariah during the post‑exilic period when the Israelites had returned from Babylonian captivity. The book contains prophecies and messages of encouragement to the people of Israel, urging them to turn back to God and receive His blessings. Zechariah 9:13‑14 (KJV) also speaks of Ephraim being like a mighty man and their hearts rejoicing, though the exact wording differs from the quotation above.

In this passage Ephraim refers to one of the twelve tribes of Israel, a son of Joseph who became a powerful tribe in the northern kingdom before being exiled by Assyria in 722 BCE. The identification underscores the historical significance of the tribe and its role in Israel’s story.

The prophecy points to a future restoration and rejoicing for the people of Ephraim. The image of a mighty man suggests strength and courage, indicating that Ephraim will be empowered by the Lord to overcome enemies and fulfil its God‑given purpose. Although this restoration was not realized in Zechariah’s own time, the verse remains a hopeful promise pointing toward a future messianic fulfillment.

The verse emphasizes joy that will fill the hearts of Ephraim, comparing it to the exhilaration of wine. This analogy highlights the depth and intensity of their gladness, a joy rooted in their relationship with the Lord and a spiritual rejoicing in God’s blessings and presence.

The prophecy also looks beyond the present generation. It states that the children of Ephraim will see and share in the rejoicing, suggesting a continuation of God’s blessings and faithfulness from one generation to the next. This generational impact offers hope that future descendants will experience the same restoration and joy.

While originally addressed to Ephraim, the passage carries broader spiritual principles for believers today. Christians can find encouragement in the promise of restoration, strength, and joy in the Lord. Trusting that God will empower us to overcome challenges, our rejoicing can serve as a testimony to future generations, reflecting the enduring hope of God’s faithful provision.
