Psalms 69:21
They gaue mee also gall for my meat, and in my thirst they gaue mee vineger to drinke. Psalms 69:21 (KJV)
Psalm 69 is a psalm of David in which he expresses his distress and suffering. He laments his enemies’ persecution, the weight of his sins, and his longing for God’s deliverance. This particular verse speaks of the bitter treatment David received from those who opposed him.
Gall: In biblical times, “gall” referred to a bitter substance, often associated with poison or bitterness. It was given to Jesus on the cross as a mocking gesture (see Matthew 27:34). The bitterness of gall underscores the harshness of the opposition David faced.
Vinegar: Similarly, vinegar was a sour liquid, frequently diluted with water and used as a common drink. It was also offered to Jesus during his crucifixion (Matthew 27:48; John 19:28‑30). The image of being given vinegar in thirst conveys deep humiliation and suffering.
Messianic Prophecy – Foreshadowing Christ: This verse is often viewed as a Messianic prophecy that finds fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Just as David experienced bitter treatment, Jesus also endured rejection, mockery, and suffering. The New Testament references this verse in relation to Jesus’ crucifixion (Matthew 27:34, Mark 15:23, John 19:28‑30).
Jesus’ suffering: Jesus willingly endured the bitterness of gall and vinegar as part of his sacrificial death on the cross. The bitterness symbolizes the depth of his suffering and his identification with humanity’s pain and sin. Through his suffering, Jesus provides redemption and salvation for all who believe.
Application for believers – Identification with Christ: As followers of Christ, we can find encouragement and solace in the fact that Jesus understands our sufferings. He experienced betrayal, rejection, and physical pain, and he empathizes with our struggles (Hebrews 4:15). We can approach him in prayer, confident that he relates to our deepest pains and offers comfort and strength.
Application for believers – Overcoming bitterness: The bitterness David experienced resonates with believers who face hostility or mistreatment. We are called to respond with forgiveness and love, following Christ’s example (Matthew 5:44). Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome bitterness and choose to extend grace and kindness even in challenging circumstances.
