“Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on

Verse: “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife” (Matthew 1:24, KJV).

Context:Matthew 1:24 is part of the narrative surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. In this particular verse, Joseph, who was engaged to Mary, obeys the angel of the Lord and takes Mary as his wife.

The angel’s message:Prior to this verse, Joseph had discovered that Mary was pregnant, and being a just man, he decided to divorce her quietly to spare her public disgrace. However, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and reassured him of the divine origin of Mary’s pregnancy. The angel instructed Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, for the child conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20).

Joseph’s obedience:Matthew 1:24 emphasizes Joseph’s obedience to the angel’s message. When Joseph woke up from his sleep, he immediately did as the angel had commanded him. He took Mary as his wife, despite the societal implications and potential misunderstandings that could arise from accepting her with a seemingly illegitimate child.

Significance and lessons:a. Trust in God’s guidance: Joseph’s obedience reveals his trust in God’s plan and his willingness to follow divine guidance. He didn’t rely on his own understanding or societal norms but chose to trust in the message delivered by the angel.

b. Accepting God’s plan: Joseph’s decision to take Mary as his wife demonstrates his acceptance of God’s plan for their lives. He recognized that this miraculous conception was part of God’s redemptive work and willingly played a significant role in it.

c. Obedience over personal convenience: Joseph’s obedience required him to set aside his personal plans and preferences. It teaches us the importance of obeying God even when it challenges our own desires or societal expectations.

d. The fulfilment of prophecy: By accepting Mary as his wife, Joseph fulfilled the prophecy spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (Matthew 1:23, referencing Isaiah 7:14).

Application:

  • Trust in God’s plan:Like Joseph, we should trust in God’s plan for our lives, even when it doesn’t align with our own understanding or expectations. God’s ways are higher than ours, and He works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
  • Obedience to God’s word:Joseph’s obedience serves as a reminder that we should be obedient to God’s word, even when it requires us to make sacrifices or step out of our comfort zones.
  • Acceptance and forgiveness:Joseph’s willingness to accept Mary despite the challenging circumstances reminds us of the importance of grace, forgiveness, and acceptance in our relationships with others.

Remember, the study of God’s Word is an ongoing process, and there are always more insights and lessons to be gleaned from each verse. May this study on Matthew 1:24 encourage you to seek a deeper understanding of God’s plan and the role He has for you in it.
