Matthew 7:28

And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

Matthew 7:28 (KJV)

This verse concludes the Sermon on the Mount, the extended teaching Jesus delivered to the multitude gathered around Him. The immediate context includes the parable of the wise and foolish builders, which calls for a response to His words.

Matthew 7:28 records the crowd’s reaction when Jesus finished speaking: they were astonished at His doctrine. The Greek word behind “astonished” conveys wonder and amazement, indicating that His teaching was not ordinary or commonplace but carried profound wisdom and authority. The people recognized the depth and uniqueness of His message, which challenged conventional thinking and presented a higher standard of righteousness.

The astonishment is explained in the very next verse, Matthew 7:29, where the people noted that Jesus taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. The scribes relied on tradition and human interpretation, but Jesus spoke with inherent, divine authority. His teaching addressed not only outward actions but also inner attitudes and motives, revealing the true intent of the Law and emphasizing love, mercy, and a genuine relationship with God.

This verse marks a transition in Matthew’s Gospel. After teaching, Jesus descends from the mountain and continues His ministry of healing and miracles (Matthew 8). The astonishment of the crowd is not merely intellectual curiosity but a response to the life-transforming power of His doctrine. The parable of the wise and foolish builders, which immediately precedes this verse, illustrates that His teaching demands a decision, not just admiration.

Just as the people in Jesus’ time were astonished at His teachings, we too should be attentive and receptive to His words. The teachings of Jesus are not mere intellectual knowledge but carry life-transforming power. As we study His words, our hearts and minds can be opened to the truth and wisdom found in them, allowing His authority to shape our lives and deepen our understanding of God’s will.

Matthew 7:28 invites us to consider how we respond to Jesus’ teaching. Do we merely hear His words, or do we allow them to astonish us and move us to action? His doctrine carries the same authority today, calling us to build our lives on the solid foundation of His truth.
