Matthew 7:4

Listen to this article

“Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?”

Context:It’s important to understand the context of a Bible verse. Matthew 7:4 is part of a larger section where Jesus is teaching about various aspects of righteous living, including not judging others hypocritically.

Hypocrisy:Jesus begins this verse by presenting a scenario where someone wants to remove a small speck or mote from their brother’s eye. However, Jesus points out that this person fails to recognise a much larger beam or plank in their own eye. The imagery Jesus uses is intentionally exaggerated to emphasise the hypocrisy of the situation.

The Principle of Self-Reflection:The verse highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-awareness. Jesus is cautioning against the tendency to focus on the faults of others while neglecting to examine one’s own shortcomings. Before pointing out someone else’s flaws, it is essential to first address our own faults and weaknesses.

Humility and Non-Judgmental Attitude:Jesus’ teaching encourages humility and a non-judgmental attitude. Instead of criticising and condemning others, we are called to approach them with understanding, compassion, and a willingness to acknowledge our own imperfections.

Application in Daily Life:This verse challenges us to engage in introspection and self-examination. It urges us to cultivate a humble and empathetic attitude towards others, considering our own weaknesses and struggles. It reminds us that we are not exempt from faults and should approach others with love and grace.
