Listen to this article

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine.”

This verse concludes the Sermon on the Mount, a significant teaching given by Jesus to a multitude of people gathered around Him. The Sermon on the Mount is recorded in Matthew chapters 5 to 7 and contains some of Jesus’ most profound teachings.

In Matthew 7:28, we see that when Jesus finished delivering His teachings, the people who listened to Him were astonished or amazed at His doctrine. This verse highlights the impact of Jesus’ teaching on those who heard Him speak. It indicates that Jesus’ teachings were not ordinary or commonplace but carried profound wisdom and authority.

Let’s explore the broader context of this verse to gain a deeper understanding. In the preceding verses, Jesus delivered various teachings, including the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12), instructions on prayer (Matthew 6:5-15), and guidelines for righteous living (Matthew 7:1-27).

Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus challenged conventional thinking and presented a higher standard of righteousness. He emphasized the importance of inner attitudes and motives, as well as outward actions. His teachings revealed the true intent of the Law, highlighting love, mercy, and a genuine relationship with God.

The people who heard Jesus were likely accustomed to the teachings of the religious leaders of the time, who primarily focused on external observance of the Law. Jesus’ teachings went beyond mere external compliance and addressed matters of the heart and inner transformation.

The astonishment expressed by the people suggests that Jesus’ teachings had a profound impact on them. They recognized the depth, authority, and uniqueness of His teaching. Jesus spoke with wisdom and clarity, challenging the established norms and pointing people toward a deeper understanding of God’s will.

This verse also serves as a reminder to us today. Just as the people in Jesus’ time were astonished at His teachings, we too should be attentive and receptive to His words. The teachings of Jesus are not mere intellectual knowledge but carry life-transforming power. As we study the teachings of Jesus, our hearts and minds can be opened to the truth and wisdom found in His words.

In conclusion, Matthew 7:28 highlights the astonishment of the people who heard Jesus’ teachings during the Sermon on the Mount. It emphasizes the profound impact of His doctrine and invites us to engage with His words, allowing them to shape our lives and deepen our understanding of God’s will.
