Matthew 13:9

Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Context

Jesus spoke these words at the close of the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-9). In that parable, a sower scatters seed that falls on four kinds of soil, each representing a different response to the word of God. The seed is the message of the kingdom, and the soils picture the conditions of human hearts. By ending with this call, Jesus urges His hearers to move beyond mere listening and to discern the spiritual truth hidden in the story.

Meaning

The phrase “ears to hear” does not mean physical hearing alone. It points to spiritual perception, a receptive heart and mind that truly grasps and responds to God’s truth. Not everyone who hears the message will understand or accept it. Jesus often used this expression when delivering something serious and weighty, inviting His listeners to pay close attention and seek understanding. The same call appears in Matthew 11:15 and Mark 4:9, each time emphasizing the need for attentive, receptive hearing.

This verse challenges us to examine our own hearts. It is not enough to hear the words of Jesus; we must be willing to internalize and apply them. A receptive heart is open to correction, growth, and transformation, aligning itself with God’s will.

Application

As believers, we should cultivate “ears to hear” by being intentional in our study of Scripture, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and applying biblical principles to daily life. This means being active listeners and doers of the Word, not merely passive hearers. It also involves a humble willingness to be changed by what we hear, allowing God’s truth to take root and bear fruit in our lives.
