Matthew 13:2

“And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s important to consider the context of Matthew 13. This chapter contains a collection of parables spoken by Jesus, including the parable of the sower, the wheat and the tares, the mustard seed, the leaven, the hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, and the dragnet. These parables convey important spiritual truths about the kingdom of God.

Setting:In this particular verse, we see a large crowd gathering around Jesus. The multitudes were so numerous that Jesus got into a boat and sat while the people stood on the shore. This setting provided an ideal platform for Jesus to address the crowd and teach them using parables.

Multitudes Gathered:The fact that great multitudes gathered to Jesus highlights His popularity and the widespread interest in His teachings and miracles. People were drawn to Him because of His wisdom, authority, and the power of His ministry. It also reveals the hunger and curiosity within the people to hear the word of God.

Jesus’ Teaching Style:Jesus often used parables, which are simple stories or illustrations with a deeper spiritual meaning, to convey profound truths about the kingdom of God. His parables were relatable, engaging, and memorable, making them effective teaching tools. The large gathering on the shore provided an opportunity for Jesus to share these parables with a diverse audience.

Boat and Shore:Jesus entering the boat and sitting while the multitude stood on the shore can symbolize several things. Firstly, it provided a natural amphitheater-like setting, enabling His voice to carry over the water and reach the crowd more effectively. Secondly, the boat may represent the Church, which carries the message of Christ across the sea of humanity. The shore can symbolize the world, representing the people who are yet to fully commit to following Jesus.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we can learn several lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of the importance of seeking out Jesus’ teachings. Just as the multitudes gathered to hear Him, we should eagerly seek His wisdom, guidance, and revelation through His Word. Secondly, it emphasizes the significance of the Church in carrying the message of Christ to the world. We are called to be vessels that bring the gospel to those who have not yet heard it. Lastly, the verse encourages us to be attentive listeners and learners, ready to receive the spiritual truths that Jesus wants to impart to us.

  • In conclusion:Matthew 13:2 presents a scene where a great multitude gathered to Jesus, prompting Him to enter a boat while the people stood on the shore. This verse highlights Jesus’ popularity, His teaching style using parables, and the significance of the Church in carrying His message. It also encourages us to seek Jesus’ teachings, actively participate in sharing the gospel, and be attentive to the spiritual truths He wants to reveal to us.
