Matthew 20:25

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.”

Context:In this passage, Jesus is addressing His disciples after James and John, the sons of Zebedee, asked to sit at His right and left hand in His kingdom. Jesus takes this opportunity to teach His disciples about true greatness and the nature of leadership in His kingdom.

The disciples, being Jews, were familiar with the oppressive rule of the Roman Empire and the Gentile rulers who exercised dominion over them.

The disciples likely desired positions of power and authority in Jesus’ future kingdom, hoping for a reversal of their current circumstances.

The World’s Way vs. Jesus’ Way:Jesus contrasts the world’s approach to leadership with the principles of His kingdom.

In the world, those in authority often use their power to dominate and control others.

Jesus acknowledges this common practice but emphasizes that it should not be so among His followers.

Servanthood and Humility:Jesus reveals that true greatness is found in serving others, not in exerting power over them.

Rather than seeking positions of authority, Jesus’ disciples should adopt a servant’s heart, considering others’ needs above their own.

Jesus Himself exemplifies this principle through His life and ministry, as He came to serve and give His life for others (Matthew 20:28).

Transformation of Perspectives:Jesus calls His disciples to a radical shift in their understanding of leadership and authority.

In God’s kingdom, leadership is not about control and dominance but about selfless service.

The disciples need to embrace this new perspective to become effective representatives of the Kingdom of God.

Application to Believers Today:As followers of Jesus, we are called to imitate His example and adopt a servant’s heart.

Leadership in the church and in other areas of life should reflect the humble and selfless nature of Jesus.

True greatness is measured by our willingness to serve and bless others, rather than seeking power and recognition.

Key Takeaway: Matthew 20:25 teaches us that the principles of leadership and greatness in Jesus’ kingdom differ from the world’s standards. Instead of exerting power and dominance, Jesus calls His disciples to embrace servanthood and humility. By imitating Jesus’ example, we can reflect His love and bring transformation to our relationships and communities.
