Matthew 24:3

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Matthew 24:3 (KJV)

The passage takes place on the Mount of Olives, where Jesus sat with His disciples. They came to Him privately, seeking clarification on three connected matters:

  • The timing of certain events

  • The sign of Jesus’ coming

  • The sign of the end of the age

“When shall these things be?” The disciples referred to Jesus’ previous statement about the destruction of the temple, which He had just predicted as He left it. Historically, this destruction occurred in AD 70 when the Romans devastated Jerusalem.

“What shall be the sign of thy coming?” The Greek word translated “coming” is parousia, meaning “presence” or “arrival,” indicating a personal and visible return.

“And of the end of the world?” The phrase “end of the world” is better understood as “end of the age” (Greek: synteleia tou aionos), referring to the close of the present era. The disciples linked Jesus’ return with this consummation and asked for signs that would accompany it.

This verse opens the Olivet Discourse, in which Jesus answers their question by warning about false messiahs, wars, and tribulations that would precede His return. The discourse emphasizes watchfulness, readiness, and faithfulness to endure until the end.

Jesus’ response in the following verses guides believers to discern the signs of the times and remain faithful in anticipation of His return.
