Matthew 24:29
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Matthew 24:29 (KJV)
Context
Jesus spoke these words on the Mount of Olives in answer to His disciples’ question about the sign of His coming and the end of the age (Matthew 24:3). The verse follows His description of the great tribulation, a time of unprecedented distress, and begins with “Immediately after the tribulation of those days,” linking the cosmic events that follow directly to that period.
Meaning
The verse describes four disturbances in the created order: the sun darkened, the moon refusing its light, stars falling from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shaken. The Greek phrase rendered “powers of the heavens” points to the heavenly realm itself being convulsed. This language is symbolic and apocalyptic, depicting the shaking of the cosmos at the end of the age. The darkening of the sun and moon can represent the disruption of the natural order, the upheaval of powers and authorities, or a decline in the world’s spiritual state. The falling of stars may symbolize the fall of earthly powers or the judgment of God upon the wicked.
Biblical connections
This imagery draws on Old Testament prophetic language about the day of the Lord. Isaiah 13:10 and 34:4, along with Ezekiel 32:7-8 and Joel 2:10, 31, use similar cosmic language to describe divine judgment. In Matthew 24, these images signal that the return of Christ will be unmistakable and world-altering, setting the stage for the sign of the Son of Man appearing in heaven (Matthew 24:30).
Application
For believers, this verse is a call to watchfulness and readiness. The certainty of these events should shape how we live, encouraging us to persevere through trials and to place our hope not in the stability of the present world but in the coming of Christ. The upheaval of the heavens reminds us that no earthly power or institution is permanent; only God’s kingdom endures.
Reflection
How does the promise of Christ’s return affect your daily priorities? The same Jesus who warned of these events also promised to be with His disciples always. In the face of cosmic disturbance, the believer’s anchor is the unchanging character of God and the certainty of His redemptive plan.
