Matthew 24:7
“For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”
Context:Matthew 24 is a chapter that records Jesus’ teachings on the signs of the end times and His second coming. In this particular verse, Jesus describes several signs that will occur before His return.
Nation against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:This phrase speaks of conflicts and wars between nations and kingdoms. It suggests that there will be a proliferation of international conflicts and political unrest leading up to the end times. Jesus’ mention of this sign implies that peace will be disrupted globally.
Famines:Jesus predicts that there will be widespread famines. Famines are characterised by severe scarcity of food and can result from various factors such as crop failures, natural disasters, or political turmoil. The occurrence of famines indicates a time of great hardship and suffering.
Pestilences:The term “pestilences” refers to widespread and deadly diseases or plagues. It implies the outbreak of epidemics and pandemics that could cause significant loss of life. This prediction aligns with the reality of various diseases and pandemics that have afflicted humanity throughout history.
Earthquakes in divers places:Earthquakes are natural disasters characterised by the shaking or trembling of the Earth’s surface. Jesus states that earthquakes will occur in diverse places, indicating that they will happen in various locations worldwide. This sign suggests increased seismic activity and serves as a reminder of the earth’s vulnerability to catastrophic events.
