Matthew 25:32
“And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:”
Context:This verse is part of Jesus’ teaching known as the parable of the sheep and the goats, which is found in Matthew 25:31-46. In this parable, Jesus describes the final judgment when He returns in glory. He portrays Himself as the Son of Man, sitting on His glorious throne, and all the nations are gathered before Him.
In this verse, Jesus speaks about the gathering of all nations before Him. This emphasizes the universality of the judgment. It implies that people from every nation will be present before God for the final judgment. This gathering signifies the comprehensive nature of God’s judgment, where no one will escape His presence.
1. The Gathering of All Nations:
Jesus further states that He will separate the people “one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats.” This separation implies a division between the righteous and the unrighteous, the saved and the unsaved. The analogy of a shepherd separating his sheep from the goats emphasizes the clear distinction between the two groups. Sheep are often seen as gentle and obedient animals, while goats can be stubborn and disobedient. This differentiation signifies the distinction between those who have lived in accordance with God’s will and those who have not.
2. The Separation:
This verse hints at the judgment that will take place when Jesus separates the people. The parable of the sheep and the goats continues to describe the criteria for this judgment in the subsequent verses. Jesus explains that the righteous will be commended and inherit eternal life, while the unrighteous will be condemned to eternal punishment. The basis of this judgment is the actions of individuals towards those in need. Jesus identifies Himself with the needy, saying, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40, KJV). Therefore, how we treat others, especially those in need, reveals our true relationship with Christ and determines our eternal destiny.
3. The Judgment:
4. Application:
- This verse prompts us to reflect on our lives and how we treat others. It challenges us to examine our hearts and consider if we are living in accordance with God’s will. Are we showing compassion and love to those in need? Are we caring for the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, and the imprisoned? Our actions reflect our faith and reveal our genuine relationship with Jesus.
Furthermore, this verse reminds us of the universal nature of God’s judgment. It is not limited to a specific group or nation but encompasses all people. Therefore, it is crucial to share the love of Christ with everyone and actively participate in His mission to bring salvation to all nations.
In conclusion, Matthew 25:32 teaches us about the gathering of all nations before Christ, the separation of the righteous and the unrighteous, and the impending judgment based on our treatment of others. May this verse inspire us to live lives characterized by love, compassion, and a genuine concern for those in need.
