Matthew 26:18

And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

Matthew 26:18 (KJV)

Matthew 26 records the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion, including the plot of the religious leaders and Judas’ agreement to betray Him. In this verse, Jesus sends His disciples into Jerusalem with a specific message for a certain man, preparing for the Passover meal.

Jesus’ instruction to go to “such a man” reveals His divine foreknowledge and sovereign control over the circumstances. The phrase “My time is at hand” points to the appointed hour of His suffering, death, and glorification—not merely the Passover schedule. Jesus is declaring that the divinely appointed moment for His mission has arrived.

Passover commemorated Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt through the blood of a lamb. By choosing to celebrate this Passover with His disciples, Jesus intentionally connects His impending death with the Passover lamb, establishing a typological link: as the Passover lamb’s blood spared the Israelites, so Christ’s sacrificial death would bring deliverance from sin. This event also forms the foundation for the institution of the Lord’s Supper, which represents the new covenant in His blood (Matthew 26:26-28).

Matthew 26:18 challenges believers to reflect on their willingness to open their homes and lives to Jesus. Just as the man in the verse responded to Jesus’ request, we are called to invite Jesus into every aspect of our lives, giving Him the preeminent place. The verse also reminds us of the importance of partaking in the Lord’s Supper, which is a commemoration of Jesus’ sacrificial death and a reminder of His presence in our lives.

The disciples’ obedience in following Jesus’ specific instructions models faithful service in preparing for the kingdom work. Jesus’ deliberate institution of the Lord’s Supper and His role as the true Passover Lamb highlight His obedience to the Father’s timetable and His love for His disciples.
