Mark 8:21

Listen to this article

“And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?”

Context:Let’s delve into Mark 8:21 from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. The verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus is teaching His disciples and addressing their lack of understanding.

This statement by Jesus follows a conversation He had with His disciples regarding the feeding of the four thousand, where Jesus miraculously multiplied a small amount of bread and fish to feed a large crowd. After this event, the disciples got into a boat with Jesus and realised they had forgotten to bring enough bread for their journey. Jesus took the opportunity to teach them a valuable lesson.

In this verse, Jesus expresses surprise and disappointment at the disciples’ lack of understanding. Despite witnessing numerous miracles, hearing His teachings, and spending significant time with Him, the disciples were still struggling to grasp the deeper spiritual truths Jesus was imparting to them.

This statement highlights the importance of spiritual perception and understanding. Jesus expected His disciples to have a deeper understanding of His words and actions, to discern the spiritual implications behind the miracles they witnessed. However, they were still focused on the physical realm and missed the spiritual significance of Jesus’ teachings.

This verse serves as a reminder to believers today that understanding spiritual truths requires attentiveness, humility, and a willingness to receive God’s wisdom. It encourages us to seek spiritual discernment and to not be content with shallow or surface-level understanding of God’s Word.

As we study the Bible and seek to understand God’s will, we should approach it with a humble and open heart, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us into deeper truths. We can ask God for wisdom and understanding, trusting that He will reveal His truth to us in His perfect timing.
