Mark 8:21

And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

Mark 8:21 (KJV)

In Mark 8:21, Jesus asks His disciples, “How is it that ye do not understand?” This question comes right after He warned them about “the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod” (Mark 8:15). The disciples, having forgotten to bring bread, thought Jesus was talking about literal bread. Jesus then reminded them of two great miracles they had just witnessed: the feeding of the five thousand (Mark 6:30-44) and the feeding of the four thousand (Mark 8:1-10). In both, He multiplied a few loaves and fish to feed a large crowd, and the disciples gathered baskets of leftovers. Yet they still worried about having no bread.

Jesus’ question is a gentle but firm rebuke. The disciples’ failure was not intellectual but spiritual. They had seen His power and heard His teaching, yet they still thought on a purely physical level. The Greek word for “understand” (noieo) implies more than mental comprehension; it means spiritual insight. Jesus expected them to grasp that His warning about leaven was symbolic, referring to corrupting influence, not bread. Their hearts were slow to perceive the deeper truth He was teaching.

This verse echoes earlier moments in Mark where Jesus challenges His disciples’ lack of understanding, such as Mark 4:13 and Mark 7:18. The parallel passage in Matthew 15:16 asks, “Are ye also yet without understanding?” These repeated questions show a pattern of gradual learning. The disciples were not rejected for their dullness; Jesus patiently continued to teach them, and later they would become bold proclaimers of the gospel.

For believers today, this verse is a call to spiritual perception. We can easily become focused on physical concerns and miss the spiritual significance of Jesus’ words and actions. Understanding spiritual truths requires attentiveness, humility, and a willingness to receive God’s wisdom. We should approach Scripture with an open heart, asking the Holy Spirit to guide us into deeper truth. We can pray for discernment, trusting that God will reveal His will in His perfect timing.

Jesus’ question still challenges us: do we truly understand who He is and what He teaches? Like the disciples, we have witnessed His faithfulness in our lives. Yet we often forget and worry about earthly needs. May we learn to see beyond the physical and rest in the spiritual truths Jesus reveals.
