Mark 8:20
And when the seuen among foure thousand: how many baskets full of fragments tooke ye vp? And they said, Seuen. Mark 8:20 (KJV)
In this passage Jesus is speaking to His disciples after feeding a crowd of four thousand people with just a few loaves of bread and fish. He asks them about the number of loaves bought they had. The Gospel records that the disciples collected seven baskets of leftovers. “And they took up seven baskets of the fragments, which remained to them, after they had eaten the little that was there.”
Context: The disciples reported that they collected seven baskets of leftovers after the miracle. This detail underscores the reality of the provision that had taken place.
Miraculous Provision: The feeding of the four thousand is one of the miracles performed by Jesus, demonstrating His power to provide abundantly with seemingly limited resources. This miracle is distinct from the feeding of the five thousand mentioned earlier in Mark 6:30‑44. Both instances highlight Jesus’ compassion and ability to meet the physical needs of the people.
A Lesson in Faith: Jesus’ question to the disciples about the number of loaves bought they had carries a deeper meaning. It serves as a teaching moment for the disciples to reflect on their faith and recall the provision of God. By asking this question, Jesus directs their attention to the evidence of God’s abundance and their participation in His miraculous work. The disciples’ note that they gathered seven baskets of fragments likewise draws attention to the evidence of God’s abundance and their role in the miracle.
Symbolism of the Number Seven: The number seven holds significance in biblical numerology, often representing completion, perfection, or fullness. In this verse the disciples mention that they collected seven baskets of leftovers. This number emphasizes the sufficiency and completeness of God’s provision, revealing that Jesus not only meets the immediate needs of the crowd but exceeds them, leaving no shortage.
Application to Our Lives: This passage encourages us to have faith in God’s provision, even when circumstances seem challenging or resources appear scarce. Just as Jesus provided abundantly for the crowd, He can also meet our needs according to His riches and glory (Philippians 4:19). We are reminded to trust in His faithfulness, relying on Him rather than our own limited understanding.
Gratitude and Stewardship: The disciples’ role in collecting the leftover fragments teaches us the importance of gratitude and responsible stewardship. Despite the miraculous nature of the provision, they gathered the remnants to prevent waste and demonstrate good stewardship of God’s blessings. Likewise, we should be thankful for what God provides and use His gifts wisely, being mindful of sharing and helping others.
