Mark 6:31
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
Mark 6:31 (KJV)
Context
Jesus had sent out His twelve disciples to preach, teach, and heal. When they returned, they gathered around Him and reported all that they had done and taught (Mark 6:30). Mark 6:31 records Jesus’ immediate response to their report.
Meaning
Jesus invited His disciples to come apart to a desert place and rest. The phrase “desert place” indicates a secluded, solitary location, free from noise and hurry, where they could find refreshment after their wearisome journey and hard labor. The invitation is personal: “Come ye yourselves apart.” Jesus Himself is included in the call, as He says “Come… and rest a while.” The reason given is the unceasing flow of people coming and going, which left them no time even for meals. This shows Jesus’ care for His workers, acknowledging their fatigue and providing an opportunity for recovery.
Biblical connections
The rhythm of labor and rest in Christian service is a consistent biblical theme. In the Old Testament, God established a pattern of work followed by rest, culminating in the Sabbath commandment (Exodus 20:8-11). Jesus Himself often withdrew to solitary places to pray (Luke 5:16), modeling the importance of stepping away from ministry demands to be with the Father. Here, Jesus initiates the time of rest for His disciples, demonstrating that rest is not a luxury but a necessary part of faithful service.
Application
This verse teaches us about the importance of balancing ministry and rest in our own lives. It is essential to recognize our limitations and take time to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with God. By doing so, we can avoid burnout and be more effective in our service to others. Beyond the physical aspect of rest, we can also apply this verse to our spiritual lives. We need to set aside time to retreat from the busyness and distractions of life and spend time alone with God. In solitude, we can seek His presence, listen to His voice, and be spiritually refreshed.
Trusting God’s Timing: In this verse, Jesus demonstrated His trust in God’s timing and plan. He knew that it was the right time for the disciples to rest and find solitude. Similarly, we should trust in God’s timing and allow ourselves to rest in His provision, knowing that He will guide and sustain us.
Reflection
Mark 6:31 reminds us of the importance of rest and rejuvenation, both physically and spiritually. By finding time to retreat and spend quality time with God, we can renew our strength, gain clarity, and be equipped to continue serving Him and others effectively.
