Mark 9:15

Posted on 18 May at 14:46
Listen to this article

“And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.”

Context:Mark 9:15 is part of a larger narrative known as the Transfiguration of Jesus, which occurs in Mark 9:2-13. In this event, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, where He is transfigured before them. His appearance changes, and Elijah and Moses appear with Him. They have a conversation, and then Peter suggests building three tabernacles for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Afterward, as they come down from the mountain, the verse in question follows.

Observations:– “And straightway”: This phrase indicates that something happened immediately or without delay. The people’s reaction occurred promptly after they saw something remarkable.

– “all the people”: Refers to a crowd of individuals who witnessed the event or became aware of it. It could include the disciples who were not present on the mountain.

– “when they beheld him”: The people saw or looked at Jesus. It implies that something about Jesus caught their attention.

– “were greatly amazed”: The people experienced a sense of astonishment, wonder, or awe. The transfiguration was a miraculous and extraordinary event that elicited strong emotions.

– “running to him”: Upon being amazed, the people hurriedly approached Jesus, moving quickly toward Him.

– “saluted him”: The people greeted or paid respects to Jesus. This act could signify their recognition of His authority, honor, or divinity.

Interpretation:– Mark emphasises the immediate response of the people to Jesus. The miraculous sight of the transfiguration caused them to be greatly amazed, prompting them to run towards Jesus.

– The people’s reaction reflects the awe-inspiring nature of Jesus’ glory and the divine presence revealed in the transfiguration. It demonstrates the impact of witnessing Jesus’ divine identity being unveiled.

– The act of saluting Jesus suggests reverence and acknowledgement of His authority. The people recognised Jesus as someone significant, worthy of respect and honour.

– This verse highlights the profound effect that encountering Jesus and witnessing His glory can have on people. It serves as a reminder of the transformative power of encountering God’s presence.

Application:

  • As believers, we should approach Jesus with a sense of awe and reverence, recognising His divinity and authority over our lives.
  • Just as the people in the verse ran to Jesus, we should eagerly seek to draw near to Him, pursuing a deeper relationship and fellowship with Him.
  • The transfiguration account reminds us of the glory and power of Jesus. It encourages us to trust in His divine nature and promises, even in challenging times, knowing that He is capable of extraordinary things.
  • We should seek opportunities to encounter the presence of God in our lives through prayer, worship, and studying His Word, anticipating the transformative impact such encounters can have on our faith.

Remember, studying the Bible involves considering the broader context, consulting additional resources, and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit for a comprehensive understanding of Scripture.
