Mark 11:30
The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
Mark 11:30 (KJV)
Context
Jesus speaks these words in the temple courts shortly after His cleansing of the temple (Mark 11:15-19). The chief priests, scribes, and elders confront Him, demanding to know by what authority He acts (Mark 11:27-28). Instead of answering directly, Jesus poses a counter-question about John’s baptism, placing His interrogators in a dilemma.
Meaning
The question “The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?” presents a clear contrast between divine and human origin. The Greek wording (ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων) sets “from heaven” against “from men,” leaving no middle ground. Jesus’ added command, “answer me,” underscores the demand for a response, holding His questioners accountable for their answer.
By asking this, Jesus does not evade the challenge but turns it back on His opponents. If they acknowledge John’s baptism as from heaven, they must explain why they rejected John’s testimony. If they claim it was from men, they risk the crowd, who regarded John as a prophet (Mark 11:31-32). The question exposes the real issue: the source of authority—divine or human—and forces a decision about recognizing God’s work.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in Matthew 21:25 confirms that this challenge is consistent across the Synoptic Gospels. In each, the religious leaders face the same dilemma, and their inability to answer reveals their unwillingness to submit to divine authority.
Application
This verse teaches that true authority comes from God, and human reasoning alone cannot account for the work of God through His messengers. When confronted with God’s work, we are called to respond honestly, not to evade or rationalize. Jesus’ wisdom in handling hostility shows us how to address opposition with discernment, turning the question back to the heart of the matter.
Reflection
Consider how you respond to God’s authority in your own life. Do you recognize His work even when it comes through unexpected messengers? Are you willing to answer honestly when He asks you to account for your beliefs? Let this verse prompt self-examination and a renewed commitment to honor what is truly from heaven.
