Luke 2:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:42
Listen to this article

“And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.”

Context:Luke 2:17 is part of the narrative surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. In this passage, a group of shepherds had just encountered a host of angels who proclaimed the good news of the birth of the Savior. After seeing this extraordinary event, the shepherds went to Bethlehem to find the child and then proceeded to share the message they had heard with others.

Witnessing the Divine Announcement:The shepherds’ experience with the angels was a powerful encounter with the divine. The fact that God chose to reveal the birth of the Messiah to humble shepherds emphasizes that the message of salvation is not reserved for the privileged or powerful but is accessible to all. It reminds us that God’s love extends to everyone, regardless of their social status.

Responding in Faith:Upon hearing the angels’ proclamation, the shepherds took action. They went to Bethlehem to find the child, demonstrating their faith in the message they received. Similarly, when we encounter the truth of God’s Word, it should move us to respond in faith and seek a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

Spreading the Good News:Once the shepherds found the child, they made known abroad the saying that had been told to them. They became messengers of the good news, sharing the remarkable story of the Savior’s birth with others. This highlights the importance of sharing our faith and proclaiming the Gospel to those around us. Just as the shepherds were excited to share what they had witnessed, we should also be enthusiastic about sharing the truth of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection with others.

The Power of Testimony:The shepherds’ testimony carried weight because it was based on their personal experience. They didn’t simply repeat what they had heard from the angels; they had seen the child for themselves. Similarly, our testimony of encountering Jesus and experiencing His transformative power carries significant influence in sharing the Gospel. People are often moved by personal stories of how God has worked in our lives.

Application:Luke 2:17 encourages us to be active witnesses of God’s work in our lives. We should not only hear and receive the good news of Jesus but also share it with others. By testifying to the truth of the Gospel and the impact it has had on us, we can participate in God’s redemptive plan by leading others to Christ.

  • In summary, Luke 2:17 teaches us about the shepherds’ response to the angelic announcement of Jesus’ birth. Their faith prompted them to seek the child and then share the good news with others. It reminds us of the importance of responding in faith, actively sharing our testimonies, and participating in God’s mission of reconciliation.
